I can still smell the tumble weed!
My Great Grandpa settled in Auberry , CA - ranching on a little spread of land. (over 1,500 acres) This was considered a small ranch compared to those owned by the Blas ingames, Oneils and other big time cattle ranchers.
Great Grandpa ran cattle, built homes and worked on the Shaver Lake Power plant before passing away and leaving the land to his three sons.
My Grandpa stayed on the ranch also working cattle. One must remember that state and federal inheritance taxes was extremely high forcing my grandpa and his brothers to sell part of the main ranch.
In the 1960s my dad and mom moved to Auberry to help my grandfather - but sometimes families just can not get along. After a few years of trying my father moved us back to Clovis, CA.
During the 1960s there was no relief from high taxes and cattle prices were down. Although Grandpa tried to save the ranch it became too much work for him. He had to sell.
He did kept a few acres of the worst part - rocky, hills, etc and built a home. The premium land with alfalfa fields, pastures, meadows and ponds were sold. I remember thinking if only I were old enough and rich enough to buy the land back, I still think of this today.
This was the fate of many ranches located in the Sierra Nevada Mountains. It took an act of congress and inheritance laws changing before one could rest easy about inheriting the family ranch.
I have the advantage over many of my fellow appraisers, having grown up in Auberry and knowing the area. Be assured your Auberry Appraisal is in good hands.
